Anthem fans sign online petition to save game before server shutdown

Beleaguered EA live-service title Anthem is officially on borrowed time. Electronic Arts recently confirmed that the game’s servers will be permanently shut down on January 12, 2026, rendering the title entirely unplayable. In response, loyal fans have launched a campaign to prevent Anthem from vanishing forever.

A Petition to Preserve Anthem

The movement began with a Change.org petition titled “Save Anthem”, which has already garnered several hundred signatures. The petition urges EA to preserve the game in some capacity, even after online servers go dark. Fans are requesting that the publisher:

  • Release the game’s server files or binaries to allow community-hosted servers.

  • Remove microtransactions and incorporate premium content into the regular loot pool.

  • Offer the binaries as an optional offline or LAN-enabled DLC, ensuring continued playability.

The initiative is gaining momentum on social media under hashtags like #SaveAnthem and #AnthemPreservation.

“We know Anthem had flaws, but its flight and combat systems were unmatched. All we’re asking is the chance to keep playing,” wrote one supporter.

Anthem’s Rise and Fall

Anthem, developed by BioWare and published by EA, launched in early 2019 with lofty expectations. The sci-fi looter-shooter earned praise for its aerial traversal, mech-style combat, and stunning visuals, but was also criticized for its weak story, repetitive grind, and unstable live-service model.

Although BioWare planned a complete overhaul known as Anthem Next, the rework was officially canceled in 2021. Since then, development support vanished, and the game maintained only a small but dedicated player base.

The End Is Near — But Is It Final?

EA’s announcement of the January 2026 shutdown came with little fanfare, prompting concern across gaming communities about the preservation of live-service games in general. As of now, neither EA nor BioWare have responded to the petition or issued any statements addressing the fan-led movement.

Still, fans remain hopeful.

With other studios beginning to explore offline modes or open-source tools for legacy online titles, players believe that EA has the opportunity—and responsibility—to ensure Anthem doesn’t fade into oblivion.
