Anime fans currently following the ongoing adaptation of Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori) have received official confirmation regarding the series’ total run. According to recently revealed Blu-ray home video release details, the historical fantasy anime will air for a total of 24 episodes.
Produced by legendary animation studio Tatsunoko Production, the series adapts Chie Shinohara’s iconic classic manga, which originally debuted in 1995 and concluded its publication run at 28 volumes. Combining action, adventure, drama, historical fiction, time travel, and romance, this classic shoujo narrative has finally received a long-awaited television adaptation.
The story follows Yuri, an ordinary modern-day teenager who is suddenly transported back in time to the ancient Hittite Empire in Anatolia. Upon her arrival, she discovers she has been targeted by a ruthless and ambitious queen who intends to use Yuri as a human sacrifice in a blood ritual. The queen’s dark scheme aims to curse and eliminate all rightful heirs to the throne, leaving her own son as the sole successor to the empire.
Yuri’s life is saved through the timely intervention of Prince Kail, who steps in to protect her from the queen’s forces. Although Kail promises to find a way to return Yuri safely to her own era, their plans are constantly disrupted by the queen’s endless political plots and deadly assassination attempts. As the two fight side-by-side to navigate dangerous court intrigue, a deeply rooted romantic bond begins to form between them, further entangling Yuri’s destiny with the ancient world.
With a confirmed 24-episode order, fans can look forward to a substantial adaptation of Yuri and Prince Kail’s epic journey through ancient history.
