Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem will feature a fully playable third-person mode, and the decision comes straight from returning director Koshi Nakanishi. In a recent interview, Nakanishi admitted that his last game, Resident Evil 7, might have been too scary for some players, leading to the addition of a more accessible gameplay perspective in the new installment.

Nakanishi, who is widely credited for shaping Resident Evil 7 into one of the scariest entries in the franchise, explained to GamesRadar+ that some players simply could not handle the extreme first-person tension. “Resident Evil 7 was possibly too scary, and some people couldn’t handle it,” he said. “That’s why we added third-person mode this time—to make the horror slightly easier to deal with.”

How Third-Person Mode Changes the Horror

In Resident Evil Requiem, the third-person mode won’t just be a camera switch. Nakanishi told Game Informer that the perspective will change how players experience stalker enemies. For instance, when the protagonist trips, falls, or reacts to enemy taunts in third-person, the pursuing enemy will briefly pause. This mechanic gives players a small recovery window, easing the intensity while still keeping the tension alive.

While the game will still deliver terrifying moments, Nakanishi clarified that Resident Evil Requiem is not designed to be the scariest Resident Evil ever. Instead, the goal is to balance fear with a narrative-driven experience. Producer Masato Kumazawa added that the game will mix horror with mystery, puzzle-solving, and action to create a well-rounded survival horror adventure.

Release Date and Preview

Fans won’t have to wait too long. Resident Evil Requiem is set for a global release on February 27, 2026, with Japanese players potentially getting an early preview at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2025, where Capcom is expected to showcase more gameplay details.

With Koshi Nakanishi back in the director’s chair and Capcom experimenting with multiple gameplay perspectives, Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated horror titles of 2026.
