Online servers for Call of Duty: WW2 on PC are finally back online after being taken down due to severe hacking issues that plagued the 2017 shooter earlier this summer. Activision never officially confirmed the exact cause behind the game’s removal from the Microsoft Store, but widespread reports of RCE (remote code execution) exploits forced the publisher to pull the title offline shortly after its debut on Xbox Game Pass.

Why Call of Duty: WW2 Was Taken Offline

In late June, Call of Duty: WW2 joined Xbox Game Pass as part of Microsoft’s effort to bring older entries in the franchise to the subscription service. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, the title marked a return to the franchise’s World War II roots after the controversial Infinite Warfare. Fans were initially excited to revisit the 2017 release, but the enthusiasm didn’t last long for PC players.

The game quickly became a target for hackers using RCE exploits to gain control of other players’ PCs. While Xbox One and Series X/S players were unaffected, the PC version’s multiplayer was essentially unplayable. Activision quietly removed the game from the Microsoft Store and took its servers offline, citing only “an issue” at the time.

The Servers Are Back — But With Warnings

Nearly two months later, Activision confirmed via the official Call of Duty Updates account on X that Call of Duty: WW2 has returned to the Microsoft Store. The game’s online servers are once again live for PC Game Pass subscribers, allowing players to jump back into classic maps, multiplayer battles, and Nazi Zombies mode.

However, Activision has not clarified whether the RCE hacking vulnerability has been fully resolved. This uncertainty leaves some players hesitant, with many in the community advising caution until the publisher makes a direct statement about the exploit fix.

Call of Duty on Xbox Game Pass

The return of Call of Duty: WW2 is part of Microsoft’s broader push to expand the Game Pass library with Activision-Blizzard titles following its $69 billion acquisition in late 2023. Alongside WW2, other entries like Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Modern Warfare 3 (2023), and Black Ops 6—the first entry to launch day-one on Game Pass—are also available.

Additionally, popular non-CoD franchises such as Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Diablo have been added, giving Game Pass subscribers a growing selection of Activision classics.

A Step Forward, But Questions Remain

For now, PC players can finally access Call of Duty: WW2 servers again, but the shadow of the earlier hacking issues still looms large. Unless Activision provides clarity on the security fixes, fans diving into online multiplayer should proceed with caution.
