Nintendo Switch 2 console sales surpass 2 million units in the U.S.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially sold more than 2 million units in the United States alone, marking a huge milestone for the highly anticipated console. After overcoming a rocky pre-order launch and controversy over its game key card system, Nintendo’s latest hardware has gone on to achieve record-breaking success.

A Strong Start After a Rocky Beginning

Despite some early backlash regarding its pricing and the way it handles physical game cartridges, the Switch 2 has quickly proven itself to be a sales juggernaut. In July, the console surpassed 6 million global sales, reaching that milestone in under two months—faster than the original Switch.

Blockbuster titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World have played a huge role in driving early adoption, making the Switch 2 one of the fastest-selling consoles of the year.

Analyst Insights on the Milestone

Games industry analyst Mat Piscatella revealed on Bluesky that Switch 2 sales in the U.S. were enough to boost hardware spending by 21% in July alone. He also noted that the system is currently 75% ahead of the sales pace of the original Switch at this stage in its lifecycle—an impressive feat considering the original is one of the best-selling consoles of all time.

While Piscatella once predicted that the Switch 2 would not outsell its predecessor, the rapid pace of early sales suggests that Nintendo may yet surprise industry watchers.

Outselling the Competition

The Switch 2’s momentum comes at a time when other gaming giants are struggling. Hardware sales for the PlayStation 5 fell 47% in July, while the Xbox Series X/S dropped by 69%. Despite those declines, Nintendo’s console managed to lift the overall U.S. gaming hardware market, more than compensating for the downturn from its rivals.

In Japan, the Switch 2 has already surpassed the lifetime sales of the Xbox Series X/S. Now, with U.S. numbers climbing rapidly, Nintendo is leading the global console race.

What This Means for Nintendo

Passing the 2 million sales milestone in the U.S. so quickly not only reinforces Nintendo’s dominance in the market but also sets the tone for what could be another historic generation for the company. If momentum continues, the Switch 2 might even challenge the record-breaking success of its predecessor.

For now, it’s clear that the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t just selling well—it’s carrying the industry forward at a time when competitors are struggling to keep pace.
