Helldivers 2 Player Count Skyrockets has seen a massive surge in player numbers following its long-awaited Xbox Series X/S release, with its concurrent active player count reaching record highs and sparking a fresh wave of excitement within the community.
Released in February 2024, Helldivers 2 was originally a PC and PlayStation 5 exclusive. In a surprising twist, Sony permitted developer Arrowhead Studios to launch the game on Xbox as well — a rare move given the long-standing console rivalry.
From Backlash to Breakthrough
At launch, Helldivers 2 drew huge attention, amassing more than 450,000 concurrent players on Steam and even surpassing giants like Counter-Strike 2. However, Sony’s controversial decision to mandate PSN accounts for PC players triggered backlash, leading to a drop in numbers despite the company later reversing the requirement.
Arrowhead worked hard to rebuild goodwill through regular updates and events, but the game never quite recaptured its early peak — until now.
Xbox Launch Sparks Record Numbers
The Xbox release on August 26 delivered an immediate impact. According to a Reddit user report, the concurrent player count surged from 146,000 to 390,000 in just seven minutes. Steam alone crossed 165,000 players, its highest since launch, while PS5 numbers — though undisclosed — are also believed to be strong.
Considering this spike happened on a weekday, analysts expect the weekend tally could soar past 600,000 players, as both newcomers and veterans return to defend Super Earth.
New Content Keeps Momentum Strong
The Xbox debut coincided with the launch of the Helldivers 2 x Halo: ODST Legendary Warbond, a crossover event adding Halo-inspired armor sets, weapons, and cosmetics for 1,500 Super Credits. Arrowhead has also confirmed that future Legendary Warbonds will feature collaborations with other major IPs.
Fans won’t have to wait long for more. On September 2, the Into the Unjust update will introduce new Terminid enemy types and Hive Worlds maps. Just two days later, the Dust Devils Premium Warbond arrives on September 4, adding even more weapons, stratagems, armors, and customization options.
