Yoshi-P Warns Final Fantasy 14 PS4 Support Is Reaching Its Limits

Final Fantasy 14 has largely wrapped up the main story of Dawntrail, its latest expansion, and is now moving toward its next major story arc. While fans are eager to see what comes next, players on PlayStation 4 may face an uncertain future with their console of choice.

Final Fantasy 14 Is Pushing PS4 Hardware to the Limit

In a recent interview with Feed4Gamers, producer and director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) was asked about the game’s ongoing support for the aging PS4. Yoshida avoided directly confirming whether the MMORPG would remain playable on PS4 by the time its next expansion or Patch 8.5 arrives, but admitted that the game is now pushing the system to its limits.

He explained that Sony has specific hardware regulations related to data limits, and while the developers previously received an increase from Sony, Square Enix has now been informed that the console is reaching the end of what it can handle.

Yoshi-P’s Commitment to Players

Yoshi-P emphasized that the development team wants to support as many platforms as possible for as long as they can. However, he acknowledged that the PS4 will eventually be “at its limits in terms of its technology.” Importantly, he promised that if support for the PS4 must be discontinued, he would personally explain the reasoning clearly to players before the transition happens.

Time for Players to Consider an Upgrade

For Final Fantasy 14 fans still playing on PS4, now may be the right time to start considering an upgrade. The game already offers enhanced versions on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, which benefit from smoother performance and better graphics. Yoshida also revealed that Square Enix has had “positive discussions” about possibly bringing Final Fantasy 14 to the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, which could give players another option in the future.

Since the PS4’s version has missed out on some of the visual improvements offered by newer platforms, upgrading could give players a fresh way to experience Eorzea all over again — just in time for the game’s next big chapter.
