Battlefield 6 has finally addressed how matchmaking works, clearing up a hot topic among fans as the game nears its highly anticipated release. The next entry in EA’s long-running shooter franchise marks the series’ return since Battlefield 2042 in 2021, promising a mix of intense combat, large-scale warfare, and player freedom — making it one of 2025’s most awaited titles.

The open beta for Battlefield 6 has fueled excitement, giving players a taste of the action with new maps, the return of classic classes — Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon — plus a variety of weapons and vehicles. Alongside these gameplay elements, players are getting accustomed to another key component: matchmaking.

Recently, lead producer David Sirland took to Twitter (source) to explain how matchmaking in Battlefield 6 operates. Responding to a player’s question about Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM), Sirland clarified that SBMM is not the main factor. Instead, matchmaking primarily considers ping (connection quality) and time to game (match availability).

“Skill is a factor, but low on the list,” Sirland noted, adding that all game modes still “need a spread of skill to work well.”

This approach contrasts with games like Call of Duty, where SBMM often takes center stage — a system that has divided its community. Critics argue that SBMM can lead to overly competitive and exhausting matches, while supporters say it ensures fairer play.

Sirland also reaffirmed that Battlefield 6 will match players based on server availability and geographic location, helping reduce lag and improve overall experience. The goal, according to the development team, is to balance quick, stable matchmaking with a healthy mix of player skill levels, allowing matches to feel both fair and varied.

With the October 10, 2025 release approaching, players will soon find out firsthand whether Battlefield 6’s matchmaking philosophy delivers the ideal battlefield experience.
