Battlefield 6 design director Shashank Uchil has weighed in on one of the game’s biggest talking points — the size of its maps. The comments, made during a recent interview with VGC, shed light on why some of the open beta maps feel smaller than what many fans expect from the Battlefield series.
Player Concerns Over Map Scale
Since the start of the open beta, players have voiced mixed feelings about the map sizes. Some believe they feel too small, drawing comparisons to Call of Duty’s Ground War mode rather than the sprawling battlefields the franchise is known for. While EA DICE has clarified that the beta only features a small selection of maps and doesn’t reflect the full launch experience, the criticism has still gained traction among the community.
Design Philosophy: Catering to Every Player Type
Speaking at the Battlefield 6 multiplayer reveal event, Uchil outlined the team’s approach to map design:
“We want to make a map that suits every type of player. They could be infantry players. So we want to make sure we have good infantry maps. Maybe a player who likes tanks, vehicles. OK, let’s make a map that’s good for infantry and tanks. You know what? I like helicopters. Let’s make a map for that. And then the jets… So let’s make a map that caters to them as well.”
This approach means that certain maps may focus heavily on specific gameplay styles, rather than being all-encompassing arenas. It’s a design choice that could inspire strong opinions — both positive and negative — from the player base.
“Scale Is Not Everything”
Addressing the size debate directly, Uchil stressed that bigger isn’t always better:
“Scale is not everything. Right? Well, just because you have X kilometers doesn’t mean it’s going to be a good map, because then if you make a really big map, you’re going to fill it up with stuff. Then it becomes more of an open world. And then you start compromising on a bunch of stuff.”
The takeaway? The smaller scale seen in the open beta maps is the result of intentional design decisions aimed at ensuring gameplay balance and maintaining the Battlefield experience without sacrificing flow and combat density.
What This Means for Battlefield 6
While some fans might still prefer larger-scale engagements, Uchil’s comments reveal that Battlefield 6’s maps are built with a focus on specialization, pacing, and variety rather than sheer size. With the full release still ahead, it remains to be seen how the community will respond once all maps are available.
