Charlie Cox Didn’t Play Clair Obscur, Feels Like a Fraud

One of 2025’s biggest gaming surprises, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, continues to make waves with players and critics alike. Yet, in an unexpected twist, the voice behind one of the game’s standout characters has admitted he feels completely unworthy of the praise.

At the 2025 Washington State Summer Con, Daredevil star Charlie Cox, who voices the complex and fan-favorite character Gustave in the French JRPG, opened up about his surprisingly brief involvement in the project.

“My agent asked me if I wanted to go and do a voiceover,” Cox explained during a panel. “People keep saying how amazing it is and congratulations, and I feel like a total fraud. But I’m so thrilled for the company and that it did really well.”

A Huge Game with Humble Roots

Developed by Sandfall Interactive, a small studio based in France, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has shattered expectations across the industry. The game sold 3 million copies within its first 72 hours, receiving public praise even from the President of France. By the 33rd day of release, it had sold an appropriately symbolic 3.3 million units, fueling its status as a front-runner for Game of the Year 2025.

Despite the enormous success, Cox confessed that he hasn’t even played the game himself and only spent about four hours recording his lines for Gustave.

This revelation, shared in a GamesRadar report, has left fans both amused and impressed, noting that even minimal performances can leave a lasting impact when well executed.

Fans Respond with Praise, Not Judgment

Rather than expressing disappointment, many fans have shown overwhelming support for Cox’s honesty. On social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), players have called his performance “emotionally powerful” and praised him for his humility.

“It’s wild to think he only recorded for a few hours,” one user wrote. “That just speaks to how talented Charlie is.”

Cox’s experience reflects a broader truth in game development: the magic of storytelling often comes from dozens of moving parts—actors, artists, developers—each doing their part, sometimes without seeing the full picture.

From Superheroes to RPG Icons

Best known for portraying Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Charlie Cox is no stranger to emotionally charged roles. Still, his confession highlights a growing trend in the game industry: big-name actors lending their voices to blockbuster titles, often without playing the game themselves.

As Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to climb the charts and dominate discussions, Cox’s raw honesty adds a human touch to a game already celebrated for its emotional depth.
