Toshiya Wakabayashi’s comedy manga Happy Kanako’s Killer Life is officially receiving a TV anime adaptation scheduled to premiere in April 2027. TOHO animation announced the news on October 17, following a teaser campaign that hinted at a new anime project with a mysterious image featuring otters.
Shinji Takamatsu, known for directing works such as Gintama and Kochikame, will direct the anime and oversee its series composition and writing. Yoshiyuki Okubo serves as character designer and chief animation director, while Drive is responsible for animation production.
The main cast includes Hana Tamegai as protagonist Kanako Nishino, Ryota Suzuki as her senior coworker Sakurai, and Junichi Suwabe as the company president. A teaser visual has also been released alongside the announcement.
Happy Kanako’s Killer Life Follows an Unlikely Assassin
The story centers on Kanako Nishino, an office worker who decides to leave her abusive workplace in search of a better job. However, her next opportunity turns out to be far from ordinary: she applies for a position at an agency specializing in contract killings.
Initially convinced that she could never take another person’s life, Kanako soon discovers that she possesses an extraordinary natural talent for assassination. Her unexpected career change leads to a series of comedic situations as she attempts to adjust to her dangerous new profession.
Kanako must also navigate her relationship with Sakurai, her prickly but attractive senior coworker, while trying to gain respect in an unfamiliar environment. The series combines workplace comedy with the absurdity of an office worker becoming a highly capable assassin.
Manga and Live-Action Adaptations
Written and illustrated by Toshiya Wakabayashi, who is also known for creating Tsuredure Children, Happy Kanako’s Killer Life is a full-color comedy manga. Nine volumes had been released in Japan as of May 2026 under the Seikaisha Comics label. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in English.
The franchise has already received a live-action adaptation starring Non as Kanako and Taisuke Fujigaya as Sakurai. Its first season debuted on DMM TV in 2025, followed by a second season that began streaming in September 2026 and concluded in October.
With the anime adaptation now confirmed, Happy Kanako’s Killer Life will bring its unusual blend of office humor and assassination-themed comedy to a new audience. The TV anime is scheduled to premiere in April 2027, with further details expected to be announced later.
