In a recent Patreon podcast hosted by former IGN journalist Colin Moriarty, it was revealed that WB San Diego was developing a kart racing game before being shut down by Warner Bros. in February 2025. As reported by Wolf’s Gaming Blog, a former employee of WB San Diego reached out to Moriarty to share details about the now-canceled project.
According to the former developer, the kart racer was codenamed Moonlight and was intended to feature iconic characters from across the Warner Bros. universe. These included Scooby-Doo, Adventure Time, Tom and Jerry, and other fan-favorite franchises. The game was envisioned as a sister-title to MultiVersus, the free-to-play platform fighter that was also shelved.
Internally, the game had multiple working titles, including WB Racers and X-Drift Racers. It was being developed using Unreal Engine 5 and was heavily inspired by the Mario Kart series, focusing on stylized visuals and precise vehicle handling.
Moriarty claimed he personally viewed gameplay footage of Moonlight, describing it as having “stylized graphics and fine vehicle control,” which suggested a polished, arcade-style racer with cross-franchise appeal.
Unfortunately, WB San Diego’s closure, alongside other studios like Monolith Productions and Player First Games, resulted in the cancellation of Moonlight before it was ever publicly revealed. The closure is part of a larger restructuring effort by Warner Bros. Discovery, which led to widespread layoffs and the shelving of multiple projects.
With Moonlight now scrapped, fans are left to wonder what could have been—a vibrant kart racer packed with Warner Bros. nostalgia and multiplayer mayhem.
