It seems as though Red Dead Redemption 2 may finally be getting the long-awaited PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade patch — and possibly even a port to the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 — later this year.
Released in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 was a monumental success for Rockstar Games. The open-world Western epic received widespread acclaim for its storytelling, attention to detail, and world-building. Over 50 million copies sold later, fans have continued to revisit the game thanks to its depth and replayability.
But seven years on, the game still doesn’t have a native version for current-gen consoles — something fans have been vocal about. Now, new reports suggest that might be changing soon.
🔧 PS5 and Xbox Series X Upgrade Incoming?
According to a report from Gamereactor, sources close to Rockstar claim that an upgrade patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 is in development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While no official announcement has been made, the update is rumored to bring the game’s graphics and performance up to next-gen standards.
This could potentially include:
-
4K resolution and smoother 60 FPS gameplay
-
Ray-traced lighting and improved visuals
-
Faster load times
-
DualSense features for PS5 users
If true, this would mark the first time RDR2 is truly optimized for new-gen hardware — a welcome update for both newcomers and long-time fans.
🎮 RDR2 May Be Coming to Switch 2 As Well
Interestingly, Gamereactor also hinted at another exciting possibility: a Red Dead Redemption 2 port for the Nintendo Switch 2. Although the current Switch is underpowered for a game of this scale, the Switch 2’s rumored specs could make this port viable.
This wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar brought the franchise to Nintendo’s platform — the original Red Dead Redemption made its way to the first Switch in 2023, setting a precedent for a potential sequel release.
While there’s no confirmation yet, the idea of a portable version of RDR2 running smoothly on a next-gen handheld would be a major draw for Switch fans.
📅 When Will the Upgrade Be Released?
Though Rockstar Games has remained silent on the matter, leaks and insider reports suggest that the PS5/Xbox Series X upgrade — and potentially the Switch 2 version — could arrive by the end of 2025. If so, an official reveal might happen during a major gaming event this summer or during Rockstar’s own showcase.
Until then, fans will need to wait patiently, but if these rumors prove true, Red Dead Redemption 2 could ride again in stunning new form across all major platforms.
