PC gamers are continuing to open their wallets for in-game content, as microtransactions have officially become the dominant force in the industry’s revenue stream. According to Newzoo’s 2025 PC and Console Gaming Report, microtransactions accounted for a staggering 58% of total PC gaming revenue in 2024, generating $24.4 billion—a 1.4% increase from the previous year.
Top Games Fueling Microtransaction Growth
Leading this charge are Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Roblox, and Fortnite, all of which have successfully monetized their massive player bases through cosmetics, battle passes, and other in-game upgrades. These titles showcase how well-designed microtransaction models can significantly boost a game’s profitability—especially in free-to-play ecosystems.
DLC Sees Modest Growth, While Premium Games Decline
Microtransactions weren’t the only revenue stream to experience growth. Downloadable content (DLC) saw a 0.8% rise to reach $5.3 billion, accounting for 14% of total PC gaming revenue. Expansion packs and paid updates for titles like Diablo 4, Elden Ring, and World of Warcraft helped drive this category forward.
In contrast, premium game sales—once the cornerstone of PC gaming—declined by 2.6%, totaling $10.7 billion and representing 28% of 2024’s PC gaming revenue. This drop underscores a shift in consumer behavior toward free-to-play and live-service models that encourage ongoing spending rather than one-time purchases.
Microtransactions Remain Controversial
Despite their financial success, microtransactions remain a divisive topic. Games like Diablo Immortal have faced backlash for locking essential content behind paywalls, while loot boxes continue to stir debate due to their gambling-like mechanics. Critics argue they pose ethical risks, especially for younger players.
Governments and watchdogs around the world are keeping a close eye, with some countries already regulating or banning loot boxes entirely to curb potential harm.
Stable Growth for the PC Gaming Market
Overall, the PC gaming sector showed resilience, growing 0.1% year-over-year to hit $37.3 billion in 2024. Looking at a longer horizon, the market has grown 5.4% over the last two years, recovering from earlier declines during the post-pandemic period.
Newzoo projects that PC gaming revenue will continue to rise, reaching $37.9 billion in 2025 and expected to exceed $40 billion by 2027, driven largely by evolving monetization strategies and the enduring popularity of online multiplayer experiences.
