Capcom is turning up the heat for Onimusha: Warlords fans with a free update that introduces a new “Hell Mode” — an ultra-challenging difficulty setting that is not for the faint of heart.

Originally released in 2001 on the PlayStation 2 and remastered in 2019, Onimusha: Warlords marked the beginning of a legendary series. The game follows the tale of Samanosuke Akechi, a brave samurai battling demonic forces under Nobunaga Oda during Japan’s Sengoku period.

The latest update introduces an “extremely difficult” Hell Mode, accessible from the main title screen. In this brutal setting, any enemy attack results in instant death, regardless of the strength of the strike. Capcom notes that while players can use a Talisman to revive once per game, completing this difficulty unlocks the exclusive “Hell” Honor — a true badge of pride for any seasoned warrior.

What’s New in the Onimusha: Warlords Update?

  • Hell Mode – One-hit death challenge mode with revival via Talisman

  • New Language Support – Korean, Polish, and Latin American Spanish now available

  • Minor Feature Improvements – General polish to enhance gameplay

The timing of this update coincides with a growing resurgence in samurai-themed games. With Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows making waves, Capcom is tapping into that same energy with plans to remaster Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, already slated for release. Even more exciting, the upcoming title Onimusha: Way of the Sword was officially announced at The Game Awards 2024, signaling a full-on revival of the franchise.

In the wake of this announcement, fans have voiced requests for more. From Genma Onimusha DLC content to full remasters of Onimusha 3 and Dawn of Dreams, the fanbase is clearly ready for a deeper dive into the demon-slaying universe. One common feature request? The option to skip cutscenes — especially appreciated after dying repeatedly to a boss in Hell Mode.

Whether you’re a veteran samurai or a curious newcomer, this free update to Onimusha: Warlords is a perfect reason to return to (or discover) one of Capcom’s most iconic series. Just be warned: Hell Mode lives up to its name.
