In a major blow to Nintendo’s supply chain just days after the historic launch of its next-generation console, nearly 3,000 Nintendo Switch 2 units, valued at approximately $1.4 million, were stolen from a transport truck parked at a Love’s Truck Stop in Bennett, Colorado.
According to reports from Denver ABC affiliate KMGH-TV & a statement from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, the truck was en route from Nintendo of America’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, to a GameStop store in Grapevine, Texas, when the theft occurred. The driver reportedly stopped overnight and discovered during an inspection that the trailer had been broken into. Several pallets of the highly coveted Switch 2 consoles had vanished.
Interestingly, the driver claimed he was unaware of the contents of his cargo until after the theft was discovered.
Nintendo Switch 2: Fastest-Selling Console in History
This brazen heist comes on the heels of the Switch 2’s record-breaking launch on June 5, with over 3.5 million units sold globally in just four days. The hybrid console, featuring enhanced performance for original Switch games, as well as new features like GameChat and GameShare, has become 2025’s hottest tech commodity.
Demand has soared, and despite Nintendo’s efforts to meet it — including bundles like the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World — retailers and customers have struggled to keep up. Unfortunately, the Switch 2’s popularity has also made it a target for organized theft and scalping rings.
Authorities Investigating Sophisticated Theft
Authorities are investigating the incident as a targeted, high-value cargo theft. No suspects have been named yet, and law enforcement agencies are analyzing surveillance footage and conducting interviews.
This isn’t the first time gaming hardware has been stolen in transit, but the sheer value and timing of the heist make it one of the most significant console thefts in recent memory.
Nintendo & Retailers Respond
Nintendo and GameStop have not yet issued full statements, but sources indicate that replacement shipments are being prioritized and security protocols are under review. It is still unclear whether the heist will impact inventory levels in stores.
The theft of nearly 3,000 Nintendo Switch 2 consoles just days after launch highlights the dark side of skyrocketing demand in the gaming industry. As fans continue to hunt for available stock, authorities are working to locate the stolen units and ensure the culprits are brought to justice.
