Nightdive Studios, the game preservation powerhouse behind modern revivals like Turok 3 and Star Wars: Dark Forces, has turned to its fans for help choosing its next big project. This time, the studio is focusing on a newer era — PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles — and they’re asking gamers which forgotten gems are worth remastering.

Having already released eight remastered titles between 2023 and 2024, including collaborations with Bethesda on Quake II and DOOM I & II, Nightdive is proving that no era of gaming is too far out of reach. The studio is now preparing to launch the System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster in June, further solidifying their role in high-quality game preservation.

From Retro to Modern Retro

While Nightdive Studios made its name by modernizing first-person shooters from the ‘90s and early 2000s, they now have their sights set on remastering games originally exclusive to the PS3 and Xbox 360 — a generation rich in both innovation and overlooked classics.

Stephen Kick, Nightdive’s CEO, and Larry Kuperman, the studio’s business director, revealed that they’re actively exploring the idea of reviving titles from the seventh console generation. They’ve even invited fans to weigh in on social media, asking: What games would you love to see reborn?

Fan Favorites in the Spotlight

Given Nightdive’s track record with shooters, there are already standout contenders:

  • The Darkness (2007) – A fan-favorite FPS with dark storytelling and unique gameplay mechanics. A perfect match for Nightdive’s remastering expertise.

  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay / Assault on Dark Athena – Critically acclaimed for its atmosphere and stealth mechanics, these cult classics are long overdue for a comeback.

  • Lost Odyssey & Blue Dragon – While these JRPGs fall outside Nightdive’s usual genre focus, the fact that Microsoft owns both IPs opens the door for collaboration — especially given Nightdive’s recent work with Xbox and Bethesda.

  • Yakuza: Dead Souls – Although intriguing, this title is more likely to be handled in-house by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, considering their current Like a Dragon momentum.

Nightdive’s Collaborative Edge

Nightdive has shown a willingness and ability to work with major industry players. Their successful collaborations with Bethesda and id Software have already brought classic franchises like Quake and DOOM into the modern age. Their potential partnerships with Microsoft or other IP holders could unlock even more fan-favorite remasters.

Looking Ahead

The idea of Nightdive Studios remastering PS3 and Xbox 360 games marks a significant shift in retro game preservation. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, there’s growing interest in keeping more recent history alive — and accessible — for today’s gamers.

With their finger on the pulse of fan demand and an impeccable remaster record, Nightdive might just be the studio to bring your favorite seventh-gen title back from the digital vault.
