Final Round: MultiVersus Shuts Down

MultiVersus server shutdown notice with fading characters and a clock showing final hours

After months of speculation, the final curtain has fallen on MultiVersus. As of May 30, 2025, Warner Bros. has officially shut down the online servers for its ambitious crossover fighting game, with servers going offline at 9:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM ET. Following a shutdown announcement back in January, fans had hoped for a revival or relaunch—but that hope is now gone.

Final Updates and Roster Additions

MultiVersus’ final season added Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes) to its diverse roster, which originally included characters from across the Warner Bros. universe—Batman, Shaggy, Arya Stark, and more. These final additions were bittersweet, as the shutdown loomed over the community.

A Live-Service Gamble That Didn’t Pay Off

While the game saw strong initial traction during its open beta in 2022, the live-service model ultimately proved unsustainable. After Warner Bros. acquired developer Player First Games in July 2024, development costs ballooned. According to internal reports, MultiVersus cost the company around $200 million—a staggering figure, especially in the wake of the studio’s previous loss with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Community Backlash and Monetization Frustration

Players who invested in the game—especially those who purchased the $99.99 Founder’s Pack—expressed frustration and anger. Many were unable to spend their Gleamium currency before the shutdown, leading to discussions around refund policies and digital game ownership.

Although players who logged in after February 4, 2025, will retain offline access, the game has been delisted from PlayStation Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store. The shutdown serves as a stark warning of the volatility surrounding live-service titles.

What’s Next for Warner Bros. Games?

The future is uncertain. With two back-to-back high-profile failures, Warner Bros. is likely to rethink its strategy in the online gaming space. Whether another iteration of MultiVersus arises in the future or the concept is shelved permanently remains to be seen.
