In a recent interview with Famitsu, Ghost of Yotei co-creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Cornell unveiled exciting new gameplay mechanics and confirmed that Sucker Punch’s upcoming title will feature a non-linear campaign, a first for the studio.
Following a long stretch of silence after the game’s announcement trailer in 2024, Ghost of Yotei has entered a more transparent development phase. With the official release date set for October 2025, Sucker Punch is finally lifting the curtain on what fans can expect from its next big adventure.
Atsu’s Revenge: Targeting the Yotei Six
The new gameplay details spotlight the game’s protagonist, Atsu, a skilled warrior on a personal quest for revenge. Her mission centers on hunting down a deadly group known as the Yotei Six, each with unique stories, territories, and combat styles.
According to the PlayStation Store description and recent developer interviews, players can take down the Yotei Six in any order they choose — a bold departure from traditional, linear progression.
New Combat Tools and the Biggest Map Yet
Fox and Cornell revealed that Ghost of Yotei introduces new close-combat options, including the kusarigama, a chain-and-sickle weapon perfect for agile, close-quarters combat. The gameplay also appears to emphasize verticality, stealth, and dynamic takedowns.
Even more impressive is the scope of the game’s environment. The developers confirmed that Ghost of Yotei features the largest map Sucker Punch has ever built, giving players unparalleled freedom to explore feudal Japan’s snowy mountains, dense forests, and mystical shrines.
A New Phase of Development
Now that the release date is locked, Sucker Punch appears ready to share much more about Ghost of Yotei. The Famitsu interview marks the beginning of what looks to be a steady stream of reveals leading up to launch. Fans of Ghost of Tsushima will find familiar DNA in Ghost of Yotei, but this new title pushes boundaries with its open-ended narrative, evolved gameplay systems, and a stronger emphasis on player agency.
