In a massive surprise during the June 8 Xbox Games Showcase, Square Enix shocked fans by shadow-dropping Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox app on Windows 10/11 PCs. This marks the long-awaited arrival of FF16 on Xbox, nearly two years after its original release on PlayStation 5 in June 2023.

Final Fantasy 16 Arrives with Expansions and Multiple Editions

The Xbox version includes two options:

  • Base Game – $49.99

  • Complete Edition – $69.99 (Includes both expansions: Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide)

Both expansions are also available separately or via an Expansion Pass, giving players full flexibility in how they experience Clive Rosfield’s dark, mature, and emotionally rich journey through Valisthea.

Square Enix also added some digital goodies to sweeten the deal—players will receive exclusive in-game items:

  • Blood Sword weapon glamour

  • Sixteen Bells Orchestrion music item

A Mature Fantasy for a Modern Audience

As the first mainline Final Fantasy title with a Mature rating, FF16 dives deep into themes of war, revenge, and destiny. You play as Clive Rosfield, protector and brother turned Eikon-wielding warrior, as he attempts to dismantle the power of the god-like Ultima and the destructive Mothercrystals. His bond with Ifrit, one of the game’s core summonable entities (Eikons), is central to the fast-paced, action-heavy combat that has become one of FF16’s biggest talking points.

A Surprise Years in the Making

Although rumors of FF16’s Xbox debut had circulated for months, Square Enix remained silent—until now. The announcement came as a final reveal during the showcase, punctuated by a new trailer that featured gameplay footage optimized for Xbox Series X hardware.

This release also follows the game’s recent launch on Steam and the Epic Games Store, further expanding the game’s player base after its PS5 exclusivity expired.

What This Means for Xbox and Final Fantasy Fans

This surprise drop is more than fan service—it signals a shift. With Xbox getting more major JRPG titles and Square Enix exploring broader platform releases, the future is looking promising for cross-platform Final Fantasy fans.

The long wait is over—Final Fantasy 16 is now live on Xbox and Windows PCs. Whether you’re jumping in for the first time or returning for the expansions, there’s never been a better time to explore the dark world of Valisthea with Clive, Ifrit, and the rest of this unforgettable cast.
