The idea of a Fallout 3 remaster has been floating around for years, and now, one of the original designers has added fuel to the fire. Bruce Nesmith, a former Bethesda developer, recently shared his hopes for a potential remaster — and he’s calling for a major overhaul to one crucial aspect: the gun combat.

Although Bethesda has yet to confirm a Fallout 3 remaster, excitement is growing following the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Fans have long hoped to see Fallout 3 updated for modern platforms, and Nesmith’s comments have only intensified the anticipation.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith was candid about one of Fallout 3‘s biggest weaknesses. He admitted that the gunplay at the time of release in 2008 “didn’t hold up to shooters” and that a remaster should heavily revise and modernize the combat mechanics. According to him, Bethesda should take notes from Fallout 4, where gunplay was significantly improved to meet players’ expectations.

Fallout 3 marked a dramatic shift for the franchise, moving into a first-person and third-person perspective that transformed the level of immersion. Players navigated a war-torn Washington D.C. in search of their missing father, crafting an unforgettable journey in the radioactive ruins of America. Despite being nearly two decades old, Fallout 3 remains a beloved title in 2025, often cited for its rich storytelling and world-building.

However, Nesmith’s insights highlight an opportunity for Bethesda to modernize Fallout 3 while preserving what made it iconic. Fans are eager to see a remaster that not only updates the visuals but also refines gameplay to meet today’s standards.

With no official announcement yet, it remains to be seen if Bethesda will bring the wasteland back to life. But if they do, it sounds like players can expect an experience that’s even more explosive and satisfying.
