After more than two decades of silence, SEGA’s cult-classic Ecco the Dolphin franchise is officially returning. Fans of the surreal, time-traveling marine saga can rejoice—remasters of the original two games are on the way, along with a brand-new third title currently in development.
The Dolphin Returns
Originally released in 1992 for the SEGA Genesis, Ecco the Dolphin quickly became one of the most unique titles in SEGA’s library. Blending underwater exploration, puzzle-solving, and an unexpected battle against alien invaders, the game stood out for its haunting atmosphere and challenging gameplay.
The sequel, Ecco the Dolphin: The Tides of Time, expanded the game’s mythology and mechanics. Both titles are now confirmed to be remastered with modern visuals and enhanced gameplay, bringing the aquatic adventure to a new generation.
A New Game is on the Horizon
In a recent interview with Xbox, Ecco the Dolphin creator Ed Annunziata revealed that a third, brand-new game is also in development. Built with “contemporary play and GPU sensibilities,” the new entry promises to modernize the series while staying true to its deep-sea roots.
Fans are already speculating about the direction the new game will take, especially considering the original’s complex narrative involving time travel and extraterrestrial threats.
Mark Your Calendar: April 25, 2026
The official Ecco the Dolphin website now features a countdown timer set to April 25, 2026. Whether this marks the reveal of the remasters, the debut of the new game, or a full trilogy launch, it’s clear something big is coming. Annunziata has encouraged fans to keep an eye on the countdown, suggesting major announcements are in store for that date.
What’s Not Included
Notably, this new revival excludes both Ecco Jr. titles and the Dreamcast’s Defender of the Future. While Ecco Jr. was aimed at younger audiences, Defender of the Future was a more mature take released in 2000 without Annunziata’s involvement. Their omission indicates the new project is focused on the original vision and continuity of the first two games.
Why It Matters
Ecco the Dolphin has always been a niche but beloved title. Its return signals a growing interest in reviving retro franchises with meaningful updates, rather than simple ports or nostalgia-driven reboots. With the original team back on board, hopes are high for a thoughtful revival.
Stay tuned—the tides are turning, and Ecco the Dolphin is ready to swim back into the spotlight.
