Square Enix has released a fresh update for the beloved Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, rolling out Version 1.2.0.0 as of May 2025. This patch brings a mix of bug fixes, balance adjustments, and several quality-of-life improvements that aim to refine the gameplay experience for both new players and long-time fans.

Originally launched in late 2024, the HD-2D remake of the iconic RPG received critical acclaim, achieving an average score of 85 on OpenCritic and selling over two million copies worldwide. The remake updates the classic story with modern visuals and new content, while staying true to the series’ traditional turn-based roots.

🔧 What’s New in Version 1.2.0.0?

The latest update focuses on improving usability and fine-tuning the core systems. Key changes include:

  • Faster Travel: Movement speed has been increased while riding Ramia and traveling by boat, making world navigation smoother and more enjoyable.

  • Persistent Boat Speed: Players will no longer experience a speed reset after opening the menu during boat travel.

  • Custom Spell Shortcuts: A new button shortcut system allows players to assign specific spells and abilities for quicker access.

  • Combat Balance Tweaks:

    • Hero & Martial Artist critical hit rates increased.

    • Priests can now equip the Duplic Hat.

    • Defense for most monsters has been reduced (excluding metal monsters).

    • Lower chances of repeated status ailments affecting characters or enemies.

These refinements show that Square Enix is dedicated to long-term support and polish for the title.

🏆 A Standout Success for Square Enix

With over 2 million units sold, the Dragon Quest 3 Remake has become a standout success—especially given its modest development budget. The performance of this remake has helped revitalize interest in the earlier games of the franchise.

Even better news for fans: remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 are in the pipeline and expected sometime in 2025. Additionally, series creator Yuji Horii recently confirmed that Dragon Quest 12 is actively in development, describing it as a project that “will be great,” though no release date has been shared yet.

The Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Version 1.2.0.0 update proves that Square Enix is continuing to invest in the game’s longevity, bringing thoughtful improvements to a beloved classic. With more remakes on the horizon and Dragon Quest 12 in the works, it’s a fantastic time to be a fan of the franchise.
