CD Projekt Red has confirmed what many fans suspected—the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, known as Project Orion, will feature multiplayer gameplay. While the game is still in its early stages of development, a new job listing essentially confirms that multiplayer elements are being built into the sequel’s core design.
Multiplayer Elements All but Confirmed
Though Project Orion remains largely under wraps, a recent Senior Gameplay Programmer job listing reveals that CD Projekt Red is building systems that support both single-player and multiplayer modes. This is the strongest indication yet that the Cyberpunk sequel will let players explore the game’s dystopian world alongside friends—or possibly against them.
This isn’t the first hint. Previous listings, including those for a Lead Network Programmer and Senior Combat Designer, also mentioned multiplayer-related experience as a plus. These postings date back to as early as August 2024, with the most recent one solidifying the studio’s direction.
A Look Inside Project Orion’s Development
Project Orion was first announced in 2022 and entered active development around 2024. The sequel is being developed by CD Projekt Red’s new studio in Boston, with over 20 developers already working on the project as of early 2025. While the title remains in pre-production, it’s clear that CDPR is investing heavily in its long-term success.
So far, details about the story, setting, and gameplay changes remain scarce. However, the inclusion of multiplayer represents a major evolution from the original Cyberpunk 2077, which was strictly single-player at launch.
Single-Player Still a Priority
Despite this multiplayer shift, fans of traditional RPGs can breathe easy. CD Projekt Red has emphasized that single-player experiences are still a core part of its identity. CEO Michael Nowakowski recently reassured fans, stating that “cutting-edge single-player games” remain central to the studio’s future.
So, while Project Orion will likely offer co-op or online features, it’s expected to retain the rich narrative depth that Cyberpunk 2077 is known for.
What to Expect Moving Forward
No release date has been announced for Project Orion, and development is still in the early stages. However, fans can look forward to more updates as the project progresses. With CDPR’s shift to Unreal Engine 5 and a new U.S.-based team, the next Cyberpunk title is shaping up to be even more ambitious than its predecessor.
