New reports reveal that Crystal Dynamics may be bringing in an external partner to assist with the development of the next Tomb Raider game, following a delay in one of its AAA projects. Although the project hasn’t been officially confirmed as Tomb Raider, multiple clues strongly suggest that the upcoming title in the legendary franchise is the one affected.
In a recent financial report by Embracer Group, the parent company of Crystal Dynamics, it was stated that one of its AAA titles has been delayed to fiscal year 2026/27 (April 2026–March 2027). While the report avoids naming specific games, it notes that Crystal Dynamics has “recently signed an agreement with an external partner for one of its largest IPs.”
According to VideoGamer, all signs point to Tomb Raider, as it is the studio’s flagship IP. Although Crystal Dynamics is also involved in the development of Perfect Dark, that title is owned by Microsoft, making Tomb Raider the most likely subject of the report.
What We Know So Far
Crystal Dynamics previously confirmed that the next Tomb Raider would be developed using Unreal Engine 5, promising a seamless blend of the reboot trilogy’s grit with the series’ classic exploration and puzzle-solving. However, since the initial announcement in 2022, details have remained scarce.
This recent update raises both concern and curiosity among fans. On one hand, delays are always disheartening, but on the other, partnering with an experienced external developer could enhance production quality and streamline workflow.
The Legacy of Lara Croft
The Tomb Raider franchise began in 1996 and has since become one of the most influential action-adventure series in gaming. With over 100 million units sold and appearances in major crossovers like Fortnite and Dead by Daylight, Lara Croft remains an iconic figure in pop culture.
While fans wait for an official announcement and clearer development timeline, this move signals that Crystal Dynamics is committed to doing justice to the next chapter in Lara Croft’s journey.
