After decades of fan speculation and hope, one of Chrono Trigger’s original creators has finally broken the silence. Yuji Horii, the legendary game designer behind Dragon Quest, recently revealed that he is “beginning to contemplate” a remake of the iconic SNES RPG Chrono Trigger.
Horii’s statement surfaced following his appearance at a convention in Naples, Italy, and quickly reignited excitement across social media. Fans were quick to assume that a Chrono Trigger remake might be in development—though it was later clarified that the buzz stemmed from a translation mix-up.
Despite that, Horii confirmed that the idea is now on his mind.
“I’m beginning to contemplate it,” Horii reportedly said, according to GameReactor via a translation posted on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit. The growing number of fan requests and the success of recent HD-2D remakes like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D appear to have influenced his thinking.
A Timeless Classic Still in Demand
Originally released in 1995 on the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger was developed by what fans call the “Dream Team”:
-
Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest)
-
Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy)
-
Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball, character design)
Set across various time periods, Chrono Trigger follows characters like Crono, Marle, and Lucca in a quest to stop a world-ending disaster. The game’s innovative battle system, branching endings, and unforgettable music—composed by Yasunori Mitsuda with help from Nobuo Uematsu—cemented its legacy.
HD-2D: A Likely Format?
Given Square Enix’s recent successes with HD-2D remakes—such as Live A Live and the upcoming Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D—many fans are speculating that Chrono Trigger could receive the same treatment. The HD-2D style blends retro charm with modern visuals, making it a popular option for reviving classic JRPGs.
Clarification on the Rumor
Initial rumors about an active remake project circulated widely online, but Horii later clarified that no official remake is in development at this time. His comment was more reflective and forward-looking than a confirmation of plans.
Still, the fact that a major creative voice behind the original Chrono Trigger is even considering a remake has been enough to stir hope among fans.
Although no Chrono Trigger remake has been confirmed, Yuji Horii’s openness to the idea marks a significant shift from years of silence. As Square Enix continues to revive its classic titles, Chrono Trigger’s time may finally be coming—again.
