Japanese singer Ado has officially released her first autobiographical novel titled Vivarium: Ado and Me, published by Kadokawa on February 26, 2026. The book explores her life journey from childhood to becoming one of Japan’s most globally recognized singers.
In the novel, readers are taken through Ado’s early life, including a period during her school years when she experienced school refusal, a time when she struggled with attending school regularly.
The story then follows how she discovered music through Vocaloid, which became a major turning point that introduced her to the online music community.
A key moment in the narrative is when Ado began her activities as an utaite, a term used for singers who upload cover songs online. Through these online performances, she gradually gained recognition within internet music communities before eventually debuting professionally.
Her career reached a major milestone with the release of the hit song Usseewa, which became a viral success in Japan and helped propel her into mainstream popularity.
Although the novel is based on Ado’s real experiences and three years of interviews, the book itself was written by bestselling author Narumi Komatsu, who worked closely with Ado to shape the narrative.
According to Ado, the book contains many personal stories she has never publicly shared before. It explores why she decided to become an utaite and reveals the struggles and self-doubt she experienced during her journey as an artist.
One particularly interesting detail in the story is the introduction of the name Ao Sawaki. While “Sawaki” is used as a pseudonym in the narrative, Ado confirmed that “Ao,” meaning blue, is actually her real first name.
The title “Vivarium” also carries a special meaning. The word refers to a small enclosed space used to observe living ecosystems.
For Ado, the term represents the small bedroom closet where she recorded her earliest songs. She describes this space as her personal “miniature garden,” a place where her creativity grew and her musical identity began to take shape.
Through this autobiographical novel, fans are given a deeper look into Ado’s personal life and the journey that led her from recording songs in a small closet to becoming a globally recognized artist.
