Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has officially addressed the controversy surrounding the appearance of Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS) ratings on the Steam platform. The issue recently gained significant attention among Indonesian gamers due to concerns over inaccurate rating labels displayed on several games.
In its official statement, Kemkomdigi explained that some of the IGRS ratings currently visible on Steam do not fully reflect verified results from the official rating authority. This discrepancy is primarily caused by the continued use of a self-declare system, where game developers or publishers can input rating information independently without undergoing full validation by IGRS.
Furthermore, Steam is reportedly still in the process of adjusting its system to fully accommodate IGRS classification standards. This includes technical integration, data synchronization, and the development of reporting mechanisms aligned with Indonesian digital service regulations. As a result, current inconsistencies are considered part of an ongoing transition phase.
To address the issue, Kemkomdigi has outlined several key steps. First, the ministry will seek official clarification from Steam regarding the current implementation of IGRS ratings. Second, it will review the legal framework that underpins the adoption of such rating systems on international platforms operating in Indonesia.
In addition, Kemkomdigi plans to establish monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure compliance with existing regulations. This includes overseeing the accuracy of rating data and making necessary adjustments if inconsistencies are found. The government emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all digital platforms comply with national policies.
Importantly, Kemkomdigi clarified that these measures are not intended to restrict user access to games. Instead, the primary goal is to ensure consumer protection, especially for younger audiences, by providing accurate and reliable content ratings.
Amid the ongoing discussion, the public is encouraged to remain cautious when interpreting available information. For verified and accurate ratings, users are advised to refer directly to the official IGRS website. This step is crucial to avoid misunderstandings regarding age classifications and game content.
With this clarification, it is hoped that the controversy surrounding IGRS ratings on Steam will subside. Moving forward, stronger collaboration between the government and digital platforms is expected to create a more transparent, accurate, and user-friendly rating system for Indonesian consumers.
